I’ve come to realize that it is just impossible for me to update y’all on everything that happens on this crazy adventure, so I’m going to try and just share some highlights and selective stories.

It’s 4th of July (YAY AMERICA) and we’re currently in Coshocton, OHIO. We’ve finally made it through that beast of a state known as Pennsylvania. It took five days of riding cross it, which was 400 miles and 15,000 feet of climbing (no joke). Its no wonder we were all hurting so bad…Ohio has been the flat promise land we’ve all been dreaming about. There were some hills after crossing over the border yesterday and getting into Cadiz, but today we’ve finally started riding over predominantly flat ground.
Here are some highlights from week 2 of my Bike and Build experience:
- Taste of Home – rode through NEW JERSEY for 15 miles!! On our way from Port Jervis, NY to Mt. Pocono, PA we went through Montague.
- Kroger – we passed through West Virginia on our way into Ohio and I got excited when I saw a Kroger…reminded me of UVA.
- Mulberries – while stopping for a break, a passing walker notified us of a mulberry tree across the road. We picked and munched on the sweet mulberries like starving little birds…delish
- Night out in Pittsburgh – almost everyone went out to the Buckhead Saloon for drinks and dancing. At first there was a guitarist playing Beatles covers, then a DJ came on to start the dance party (which was pretty much our group plus 2-3 locals). We learned the two step shuffle, and went wild when “Shout!” came on. The best part of the night was when I requested, “Build me up Buttercup” by the Temptations (for some reason, its become our trip theme song)…and we all linked arms and sang it at the top of our lungs – CLASSIC
Today we had a Red, White, & Blue challenge in honor of Independence Day. The goal was to find cool things on today’s ride that were red, white, and/or blue. After lunch today, I was riding with Cali and Alex and we stopped off at a big garage sale with this challenge in mind. There was SO much cool stuff there (i.e. Labyrinth, laser tag, arcade machine), and we set up a perfect scene for the challenge. Cali with her red helmet, me with my white helmet, and Alex with a blue baseball helmet sat on this blue tarp and played “Hungry, hungry, hippo” with a raggedy Anne doll…beat that.
